An economically priced paddle wheel flow meter with Remote Display designed for use in various water monitoring fields. These meters have found widespread use in applications such as agricultural irrigation, aquaculture, paper mills, aquariums, koi ponds and swimming pools to name just a few.
The detached display series of meters are utilized when the sensor location isn’t easily accessible or viewable. A cable, up to 15' in length, separates the display from the sensor allowing the display unit to be conveniently mounted at eye level. The sensor assembly is waterproof, the remote display unit is sealed, however it can not be mounted underwater or in direct sunlight.
The paddle wheel flow meter with remote display, when used in conjunction with the appropriate adapter, can monitor flows in pipes ranging in size from ½” to 8”. Paddle wheel flow meters are universally accepted as a means of measuring flow. Wide range in flow rates, negligible head-loss and good accuracy at a reasonable price, continue to make these meters popular. Easy removal for cleaning permit the meters to be mounted in lines with moderate particulate levels.
The LCD display consists of 21 large digits (½" height). The digits are always displayed and easy to read in low light settings. Contained within the display unit are two replaceable standard AA batteries that will power the meter for approximately 1.5 - 3 years depending on length of wire between the display and sensor. The shorter the wire the longer the life.
How it works
An operator can select the pipe size and schedule from a list using the three embossed buttons on the face of the meter. Default units are gallons/minute and gallons. For sizes not listed, the user can calibrate the meter using a factor derived from the inside diameter of the pipe. Liters are the option. For more detailed information the instruction manual can be downloaded.
The paddle wheel is injection molded using PVC plastic, the paddle pin is stainless steel. The Buna-N O-ring can be replaced with Viton as an option. An ABS enclosure houses the electronics and a scratch resistant polycarbonate faceplate with embossed buttons completes the package.

Pipe Adapters mount the flow meter to pipes of various sizes and schedules. Specific to each pipe size and schedule, an adapter for a 3" schedule 40 pipe will not work on a 3" schedule 80 pipe. The user can program the Pipe Mounted Display Meters or the Remote Display Flow Meters for any of these adapters. The same meter head can be moved to different locations by purchase additional adapters and plugs.
Most difficulties with all flow meters are traceable to improper mountings and/or improper pipe sizing. Paddle wheel flow meters rely on the momentum or movement of water to spin the paddle and keep it free of debris, biological growth, sediment and air bubbles. Reduced accuracy and fouling problems are typical when pipes are over sized and flow rates are not within the recommend range. Pipes must remain full of water at all flow rates. This is especially critical when monitoring downward flows on vertical runs. Please read this page for selection and mounting location advice.
This system offers the simplest installation procedure and is cost effective for pipes 4” in diameter and smaller. These 13” pipe sections are available in sizes ranging from ½” to 4”. The smaller sizes are only offered in schedule 80. Schedule 40 and 80 pipe have the same outside dimensions. Therefore our schedule 80 section of pipe will glue up to your existing schedule 40 pipe. Installation consists of removing a section of the existing pipe, coupling in this new section of pipe, allowing the glue to dry and restoring the flow.
These pipe adapters mount directly on your existing plumbing. The adapter and pipe are cleaned and coated with either PVC cement or silicon sealer. Then, to secure the adapter to the pipe, stainless steel clamps are installed. Next, using the adapter as a guide, a 1½” hole saw is used to bore through the pipe. We stock adapters to accommodate schedule 40 and schedule 80 pipe. Other pipes will require a custom-machined adapter. (See section below)
Custom Adapters
These are saddle mounted adapters that are specifically machined to your pipe dimensions. A pipe with a smooth outer surface is required. In order to machine the adapters, the outside diameter and wall thickness of the pipe will be required. The adapters look and mount the same as the saddle style depicted above. The accuracy of the meter is greatly affected by the depth the paddle wheel is inserted in the flow. Therefore, wall thickness of the pipe must be accurate to within 0.010”. You need to call (715-523-1268) to have these custom machined.
The plug allows the meter to be removed and then the water flow restored. Allow for cleaning and servicing of the meter. One size plug fits all of the adapters.
Paddle Kit
The paddle wheel and pin are normal wear items. Typically, in clean water, they last for many years of continuous service. Silt/grit or chemicals in the water will shorten the life of the paddle and pin. Changing the paddle consists of pushing out the old pin and installing the new paddle and pin.
