History of Midwest Instruments & Controls
In the late 1980’s ultra low powered microelectronics had progressed to the point where a single battery could power simple devices for years. Midwest Instruments & Controls was incorporated, the sole product was a digital, battery-powered, water flow meter. Our goal was and is still is, produce a simple, accurate digital meter. Eliminating many of the unnecessary features found on more expensive meters, lowers cost and allows a simpler user experience. Our meters have under gone many changes, some cosmetic, some electronic improvements, but our focus has always been to produce a high quality, simple to use, digital water meter.
President and Designer:
In the 1970’s, as a 4th grade kid, I discovered electronics! My parents had given me a “Radio Shack 101 Electronic Projects” , I had found my passion. I spent countless hours building light operated circuits, transistor radios circuits, buzzer circuits and every noise making circuit to annoy my siblings.
By the time personal computers entered the market in the early 1980’s I had a solid understanding of electronics. The computer was the magic extension allowing one sensor to be programmed to accomplish a myriad of different tasks.
I received my BS Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis. Upon graduation I worked for a start-up company that monitored water flow in multiple environmental fields. It was during this job that I realized the need for the product that we currently manufacture.
It has been said that the owner of a small business wears many hats, I was no exception. I went back to school in the evenings and attended a number of business classes. In 1992 I started selling the meters, business was slow. Luckily I had a very understanding girlfriend who many times financially helped out with the daily expenses life throws at a person.
I was also working on the side to supplement my income. By 1997 the business had grown to the point where it required my full time attention. I quit my side job, got married to that same girl, and focused solely on the business. Looking back, I should have done this sooner. But hind sight is always 20/20.

I am passionate about Midwest Instruments & Controls. I have helped 100’s of people with water flow monitoring issues and I will try my best to assist you also. Our meters aren’t a solution for all water monitoring situations. If our meters won’t work properly, I can probably suggest a flow meter that will work for you.
